McCoy Institute Community Service Scholarship

Service Beyond Self Scholarship

Purpose

The McCoy Institute Community Service Scholarship: Service Beyond Self Scholarship recognizes graduating students and recent graduates who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to improving the live of others through meaningful community service while pursuing higher education.

As students transition from academic life into professional careers, the McCoy Institute seeks to honor individuals who have dedicated their time, talents, and leadership to advancing health, wellness, education, accessibility, and overall quality of life within their communities. This scholarship celebrates the belief that professional achievement is most meaningful when paired with a commitment to serving others.

The scholarship is intended to encourage and support emerging professionals who have demonstrated that service is not simply an activity, but a guiding principle that will continue to shape their careers and contributions to society. The intention of this scholarship is to help in coverage of professional licensure fees that would support the individual upon entrance into a career that supports public wellness.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be graduating from, or have graduated within the previous twelve (12) months from, an accredited college, university, graduate program, technical program, or professional degree program.
  • Be entering the workforce, pursuing professional licensure, beginning a residency or fellowship, or continuing advanced professional training.
  • Demonstrate a sustained record of community involvement during their course of study.
  • Have contributed to initiatives that improve health, wellness, education, accessibility, community engagement, or quality of life for others.

Submit a nomination from an eligible nominator.

Applicants are not required to pursue a healthcare-related career. Students and recent graduates from all academic disciplines and professional programs are encouraged to apply.

Nomination Requirement

All applicants must be nominated by an individual familiar with their service and leadership contributions.

Eligible nominators include:

  • Faculty members or professors
  • Academic advisors
  • Nonprofit leaders or volunteer coordinators
  • Supervisors or employers
  • Community organization leaders
  • Religious or civic leaders
  • Other individuals who can meaningfully attest to the applicant’s character, leadership, and service impact.

Nominations should describe the applicant’s commitment to service, leadership abilities, and the positive impact they have made within their community.

Selection Criteria

Recipients will be selected based on:

  • Demonstrated commitment to community service and civic engagement
  • Leadership and initiative in addressing community needs
  • Measurable impact on individuals, organizations, or communities served
  • Dedication to balancing academic or professional responsibilities with meaningful service activities
  • Personal reflection on the role service will play in future career and life goals
  • Strength of nomination materials and supporting documentation

Preference may be given to applicants who have demonstrated sustained service and leadership over multiple years of study rather than participation in a single short-term project or activity.

Award

The McCoy Institute Community Service Scholarship is a one-time scholarship award intended to support recipients as they transition into the next stage of their professional journey.

The number and amount of awards may vary annually based upon available funding and the quality of applications received.

Award Philosophy

The McCoy Institute believes that the strongest communities are built by individuals who choose to place service alongside achievement. Through the Service Beyond Self Scholarship, we recognize students and recent graduates whose actions reflect compassion, leadership, integrity, and a commitment to creating positive change.

As recipients embark upon careers in healthcare, education, business, public service, the trades, technology, the arts, and countless other professions, we celebrate not only what they have accomplished, but also the promise they show as future leaders dedicated to improving the lives of others.

Administration

Scholarship recipients will be selected through an objective and nondiscriminatory review process administered by an independent selection committee using established evaluation criteria. Directors, officers, employees, and immediate family members of directors, officers, or employees of the McCoy
